Marcel Breuer was an apprentice at the Bauhaus when he conceived the world’s first tubular steel chair. Inspired by the frame of a bicycle,

a product he greatly admired for its functional design, Breuer saw tubular steel as a way of building a more transparent chair.

Influenced by the constructivist theories of the Dutch De Stjil movement, Breuer took a familiar form — in this case the classic club chair — and reduced it to its elemental lines and planes.

The composition of leather strips suspended on steel tubes was the first chair of its kind. Breuer later named the chair after Wassily Kandinsky, the first person to whom he showed the chair.

Eero Saarinen designed the groundbreaking Womb Chair at Florence Knoll’s request for “a chair that was like a basket full of pillows…something I could really curl up in.”

The fiberglass design supported multiple sitting postures and provided a comforting sense of security — hence the name.

The Diamond Chair is an astounding study in space, form and function by one of the master sculptors of the last century.

Like Saarinen and Mies, Bertoia found sublime grace in an industrial material, elevating it beyond its normal utility into a work of art.

Harry Bertoia’s wire chairs are among the most recognized achievements of mid-century modern design and a proud part of the Knoll heritage.

In 2015 Knoll introduced the Diamond Chair with an 18k gold plated finish to honor the 100th birthday of Harry Bertoia.

In 1966, the Platner Collection captured the “decorative, gentle, graceful” shapes that were beginning to infiltrate the modern vocabulary.

The iconic pieces are created by welding hundreds of curved steel rods to circular frames, simultaneously serving as structure and ornament.

An 18k gold finish option was added in 2015 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Platner Collection.
